I am a Belgian photographer working mainly with portraiture and the human form.
Photography started as a way of making portraits, but over time I became less interested in the portrait as a record of someone. What interests me is the image itself.
I am not looking for perfection. I am looking for something interesting. Sometimes that means something beautiful, sometimes something odd, strange or unexpected. Often it is a small shift in expression, posture or light that makes the difference.
Much of my work is made in the studio. I like the concentration it brings. It strips things back to the person, the light and the camera.
Without consciously looking for it, I often find a tension between showing and not showing in my images. What remains outside the frame, in shadow or just beyond recognition can be as important as what is visible. The nude is part of that language, used when it adds something to the image rather than as a subject in itself.
I rarely begin with a finished image in mind. A shoot usually starts with an idea, sometimes no more than a reference, a piece of light or a certain atmosphere. Just as often, it is the connection with the person in front of the camera that determines where the image goes.
The photographs I tend to keep are rarely the most perfect ones. They are the ones that leave something unresolved.
